Date of Interview - Tuesday, June 13, 2017 @ 8pm MST - 10pm EST
Kat Atwell is a renaissance woman. She has strong ties with the mental health advocacy community, having worked directly with such organizations as NAMI Colorado, the Colorado Mental Health Network, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and This Is My Brave. She has served as a public speaker, show producer, host, fundraiser, and board member. She fiercely advocates for people living with anxiety and bipolar disorder, and encourages people to find their voices to both share their stories and find power in asking for help. As an individual living experience with severe mental illness, and someone who lost a best friend to depression, alcoholism, and suicide, she feels it is her responsibility to give a voice to those who find themselves in similar situations. She loves to remind people they are not alone.
Additionally, Kat is very involved in community efforts in and around Denver. She has had the honor of serving as emcee for Ignite Denver since 2015, an organization that brings together individuals who want to share their stories, information, and passions on any number of topics. She has met people from all walks of life, and is fueled by the desire to help people overcome fears of public speaking and celebrating their successes. One of the primary ways Kat thrives is through storytelling. She has been lucky enough to have spoken in front of live audiences with The Narrators, the Moth, and looks forward to her future involvement with the upcoming inaugural show of Write Club in Denver. She also performed improv comedy in both Kansas City and Denver for over 15 years. And! If that wasn't enough, she also enjoys writing.
She currently has a blog at maamandcheese.com, which covers any number of topics, and has been published in XOJane. She loves celebrating humans and their vulnerabilities. She loves watching people overcome challenges. She loves meeting new people, and sharing her sense of humor whenever she can. Despite mental health setbacks, she persists. She feels her calling is to unify people, lift them up, and in so doing, continue to learn to love herself more. Eventually, her hopes are to bring her love of being onstage and writing together in some as-of-yet undetermined way, turning her passions into a full-time career.
